About Sam

A Texas man, born and educated, I've enjoyed going against the grain except when it comes to shaving. And at 6’5”, I tend to stand out in a crowd. So, I learned to embrace it. To create and perform. To defy expectations or easy labels.

Perhaps I always had a natural curiosity for the world around me. More likely, it was a coping mechanism to stand out among my seven siblings.

We’ll never know. I’m not even the tallest.

What I do know is that by starting my teenage years lanky, gawky and with the coordination of a baby deer, I believed I would never be the best at anything.

So, I wanted to be the person who did everything. Who could talk about anything.

Not like those frustratingly perfect people that are annoyingly great immediately at whatever they try. Just well-rounded.

Sports, music, choir, instruments, theatre, books, TV, technology, history, modern events, politics, video games, comics, hunting, hiking, fishing, comedy, podcasts, blah blah blah. I learned early to take an interest in the world around me. To put my all into what I’m doing and never stop being curious. That it’s not a bad thing to be the dumbest person in the room if you’re the first one to ask questions.

Growing up with a copywriter father, I quickly learned that advertising was a career that could combine my passion for all the wonderful and horrible stuff in the world and use it as inspiration. As a favorite professor put it, “advertising is just stealing from everywhere and covering your tracks with some good design and a unique voice.” I knew I could leverage my predisposition to enjoy juggling multiple things at once and apply that to an industry that demands it. It also helped that I still hated the idea of a title defining my role.

For six years, I’ve been a copywriter — the first title to stick. But why stop there? While writing great copy is my job, saying “Yeah, I can do that” has been my career.

I’ve shot content, (poorly) edited and produced social videos and radio commercials. I’ve cast VO talent, directed VO talent and performed as talent. Writing briefs, crafting strategy and even planning media buys (to an extent) are in my wheelhouse. I’ve run Meta accounts, conducted interviews, and worked as a PA. While my graphic design skills are deficient, my doodling skills are superb.

My copywriting career began with a copywriting internship at Richards/Lerma, now known as Lerma, where I worked on campaigns for clients such as Metro by T-Mobile, Avocados from Mexico, and Clamato. Not being completely fluent in Spanish as a copywriter at a multicultural agency was a hindrance, so I followed it with a copywriting internship at Richards/Carlberg in Houston, now known as Carlberg Advertising, where I was eventually hired full-time. During my three years at Carlberg, I worked on projects for Mahindra Tractors, ROXOR, Typhoon Texas Waterparks, Central Texas College, UTHealth, Dräger Fire/Oil & Gas Safety Services, the University of Texas at Austin, and Platform Partners. Currently, you’ll find me writing at Love Advertising, where I work on the Phillips 66® Fuels, Lubricants, Aviation, and Corporate accounts, Shell Chemicals, Legacy Community Health, and Mitsubishi Logisnext.

I graduated from Highland Park High School and from the University of Texas at Austin, where I received a degree in Advertising in the Texas Sports and Entertainment sequence, as well as a minor in government and a certificate in the Business Foundations Program.
